Press / G8 SUMMIT Leaders call for 'open' energy markets, more intl investment UPDATE

(updating with further details on energy security action plan)

SAINT PETERSBURG (AFX) - G8 leaders pledged to promote 'open, transparent' energy markets, according to a joint statement published at their summit here.

They said high and volatile oil prices and growing energy demand represent serious challenges, which call for a strengthening of the relationships between producers, consumers and transit countries.

'We agree that development of transparent, efficient and competitive global energy markets is the best way to achieve our objectives on this score,' they said.
